The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: A True Story of Survival Against the Odds by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
(ages 11 and up)
When 14-year-old William Kamkwamba’s village was devastated by drought in 2001, everyone’s crops began to fail. His family did not have enough money for food or his schooling. William spent his days in the library where he came across a book on windmills. Using this book, he figured out how to build a windmill to bring electricity to his village. The community thought he was crazy, but he persevered and was able to create a functioning windmill out of junkyard scraps. A few years later he also figured out how to use the windmill for irrigation purposes.
